In March 2025, we had the privilege to work with to build the skills of 60 young ocean advocates from across the globe in strategic communication, storytelling, media engagement, and social media for advocacy as part of the European project YOLA – Citizens of the Ocean. Together, we explored the basics of strategic communications, crafted compelling narratives, and built their confidence to speak out.
Three months later, in front of ministers, diplomats, and UN leaders at the UN Ocean Conference in Nice, these same young leaders stood tall to present the Global Ocean Manifesto - a bold call for stronger ocean governance, climate action, and youth inclusion at the highest levels.
From the energy in the workshop rooms to the applause in the conference hall, this journey proved that when you empower young voices, they really can echo across the world.
- We took time to understand each participant’s profile and their starting point in communications.
- With only eight hours to cover many topics, we prioritised ensuring everyone grasped the essentials rather than rushing through advanced concepts.
- We designed practical frameworks that allowed participants to immediately apply what they learned. A highlight was seeing them put their brand-new media skills into action when national and local press arrived to interview them!
- We provided not only clear frameworks but also a list of additional tips they could take home, making it easier to keep practising afterwards.
- We offered continuous support - during the workshops, in the lead-up, and right up to the very last minute before they stepped on stage!
- Nothing is more energising than working with the next generation! They were absolutely inspiring and truly filled us with hope.
- If you think, as we once did, that they have nothing to learn from us because “everything is on the internet”- you are wrong. They were eager, curious, and genuinely hungry for our real-world experience.
