Boosting digital wellness for UN FAO staff

Sustainability starts with ourselves. In 2020, as remote work became the norm, the UN FAO faced a growing challenge: digital overload. Staff struggled with nonstop notifications, interruptions, harming both productivity and wellbeing. FAO’s Learning and Performance Branch asked us to design and deliver a Zoom Learning session titled “Multitasking in the Digital World: How to Optimize Your Time Online.”

  • The initiative reached a wide and diverse audience: nearly 200 staff members from all over the world joined the session.
  • For many, it was the first time they reflected on how digital distractions affect their work and personal energy.
  • We grounded the session in scientific insights, debunking the myth of multitasking and showing how interruptions undermine efficiency.
  • We kept participants engaged with live polls and interactive exercises.
  • We shared quick, actionable techniques like single-tasking, “deep work” sessions, and digital wellbeing practices.
  • We introduced team challenges to encourage lasting, healthier digital habits.

The session helped staff realize that multitasking isn’t a strength but a productivity trap - and that small, simple changes can bring immediate benefits.

This mission was special because it showed how small shifts in digital culture can ripple across large organizations. The curiosity and openness of FAO staff confirmed that digital wellness is not a “luxury” but a necessity for sustainable productivity and mental health. We left inspired to continue helping institutions regain control over their digital tools and habits.
